THE ORCHARD BLOG!!
June 10, 2008
We are well into the growing season for this year. Presently the apples are the size of blueberries. Each year I look forward to walking through the orchard after the bees have been in to pollinate the trees. We can see the effects of their hard work immediately as the bottom of the blossoms start to swell into little fruitlets. It was also interesting to see a particular Cortland tree and McIntosh tree side by side. The Cortland tree was pollinated well and had a good fruit set -5 fruits to a cluster, while the McIntosh had only 1's and 2's to a cluster. The reason was the state of the weather on the day the McIntosh tree blossomed. It was probably a cold or rainy day and the bees do not like to fly in those conditions. It was obviously a very nice day when the Cortland tree blossomed.

Cherries and Blueberries are in their fast growth period now and should be ready for harvest in a few weeks. Summer is picking up!
