Welcome to Hicks Orchard! New York's Oldest U-Pick Orchard.
| Our farm is nestled in the beautiful Adirondack foothills of upstate New York.
Lets take a barnyard tour.... the "Old Haunted Barn" as it stands at the entrance to our barnyard...Built in 1885, this barn housed the draft horses used on the farm. It was also the site for our Haunted Barn event of years past.
| The old "Milk House" where containers of fresh milk waited for pick up. The canisters were kept cool surrounded by well water pumped into a sunken vat.
Our herd of Nigerian Dwarf goats line up for treats on the ramp! A pulley sends goat feed up to the top goat tower.
| This is one view of the "Apple Barn" which houses our Cider Mill, Cider Donut Kitchen and Farm Store.
Front of Apple Barn. This building was built as a cold storage and packing house for apples before the farm was open to the public.
| While the barnyard is the hub of the farm, the magic happens in the surrounding orchards.
The growing season starts in May when the swelling buds on the trees explode in beautiful blossoms.
| Each spring blossom holds autumn's promise.
The cherry trees are the first to blossom. Each variety of fruit blooms in succession. Blueberries are next, then raspberries, McIntosh, etc. Northern Spys and Golden Delicious are the last to bloom, and the last fruit harvested in fall.
| Beehives are placed throughout the orchard just before "blossom". Honeybees could pollinate thousands of trees in a day . Photo courtesy of New York Apple Association
After pollination, the fertilized flowers drop the petals and new fruitlets start to grow.
| Our first crop at the end of June....Sour Cherries!
Our cherry trees are kept small so fruit is easy to pick!
| September is apple picking time. Now things get busy on the farm.
 The orchard awaits....
| Hicks Apple Cider is available fresh on the farm from Labor Day through Christmas. You can also find it at our local Hannaford grocery stores.
